Short answer: a Monroe sheepskin rug is made by hand in five steps in our workshop: (1) selection of ecologically tanned Icelandic skins, (2) colour composition, (3) stitching with gold thread, (4) finishing without synthetic materials and (5) final check and delivery. Allow 2 to 4 weeks; delivery in Belgium is free.

Step 1 — Selecting the skins

We work exclusively with Icelandic sheepskins tanned in Europe, chrome-free and ecologically, in line with the REACH regulation. Each skin is assessed individually on arrival: density of the underwool, length and sheen of the outer coat, colour and suppleness of the leather. Skins with thin patches or an irregular structure are not used for rugs.

Step 2 — The composition

The selected skins are laid on the worktable and shifted until colours and hair directions flow into each other. For a Melange we look for a balanced mix of natural tones; for White or Off White a calm, even whole. For bespoke rugs we start from your dimensions and, if you like, a photo of your room via the Rug Studio.

Step 3 — Stitching with gold thread

Our experienced fur seamstresses stitch every seam with a strong, gold-coloured thread — the most durable sewing method in the fur trade. Turn a Monroe rug over and you recognise it at once on the back: the gold thread is our signature and your proof of authenticity.

Step 4 — Plastic-free finishing

No synthetic backing, no latex, no man-made fibres. The rug consists of fleece, leather and thread, and is therefore fully biodegradable. Research by AgResearch and a 2024 study in Water, Air & Soil Pollution show that wool degrades in soil and water, whereas synthetic fibres such as polyester or nylon remain virtually intact and shed microplastics.

Step 5 — Final check and delivery

Every seam and every skin is checked one last time before the rug leaves our workshop. Within 2 to 4 weeks it is delivered free to your home in Belgium, or you collect it in our Knokke shop. After that our lifetime service applies: should a seam ever come loose or a skin get damaged, we repair it free of charge in our workshop.

What does a Monroe rug cost?
