Every Monroe rug begins long before the first stitch is made. In this article, we take you through our production process — from selecting the hides to the golden thread on the back.
Step 1 — Selecting the hides
We work exclusively with Icelandic sheepskins that are ecologically tanned — without heavy metals and in line with strict European regulations. Every hide that enters our workshop is checked piece by piece for the density, colour and structure of the wool. Only hides that pass that inspection make it into a Monroe rug — with us, quality always comes before quantity.
Step 2 — Composing the design
Then the real puzzle work begins. The selected hides are laid side by side and combined until the colours and textures flow beautifully into one another. For a melange rug we look for a balanced, mottled mix; for a white or coloured rug, an even and calm whole. And for custom orders, we start from your dimensions and your interior — every rug is composed for one single customer.
Step 3 — Handwork with golden thread
Then our experienced fur seamstresses get to work. Every seam is stitched with our signature golden thread — the strongest and most durable sewing method in the field. Flip a Monroe rug over and you'll spot it right away on the back: our signature, and your proof of authenticity.
Step 4 — Finishing without plastics
From the outset, we chose entirely biodegradable production. No synthetic fibres, no plastic finishing — only nature, craftsmanship and golden thread. Before the rug leaves our workshop, every seam and every hide undergoes one final inspection.
Step 5 — At your home
Within 2 to 4 weeks, your rug is delivered free of charge to your home in Belgium, or you can collect it at our store in Knokke. And it doesn't stop there: every Monroe rug comes with lifetime service. Should anything ever happen, we repair it free of charge in our workshop. That's our agreement — for more than ten years now.
